If you have the time, you might want to look into the hydrogen audio site.  
www.hydrogenaudio.org and check out some of the posts about clipping and how it 
relates to quality.  It seems that in some circumstances, (especially with modern 
recordings) clipping can occur during the encoding process and would seem to be an 
explanation (at least to me) for your loss of dynamic range.  Perhaps do a search in 
the archives for clipping.  The solution seems to be setting the "scale" factor lower 
to avoid "internal clipping".

Also some very good information there on ABX and other objective testing tools, though 
it appears that most of the tools are Win32 based, so you might want to join the forum 
and ask about that.  I seem to remember from your previous posts that you don't have 
good access to a Win32 based machine.
