I just posted this idea of mine to the Iriver forum and want you guys to
know about it:

****************************

Do you know what would be great for gapless palyback in the SlimX if it's
doable?

First you rip all the tracks you want to be gapless, in one file (by using
the Copy Range function in EAC);

Then you index your MP3s with a PC software made by Iriver. These would be
indexes like for CD-DAs.

(ex.: Bach's Goldberg 32 Variations by Glenn Gould 1980 are all on 1 cda
track with 32 indexes; try ripping this CD using EAC and "extract based on
indexes" and you'll get 32 wav files; most people don't know about it cause
they don't have a CD player that reads indexes)

Anyway... Once your MP3 is indexed with this Iriver software, you play it in
your SlimX (with an appropriate Firmware upgrade) and you can navigate
through the MP3 file based on these indexes. And even if you don't want to
navigate, you have a gapless playback.

Wouldn't it be possible to do this and still have these modified MP3 files
readable in other standard players?

These indexes could be just stored in some field of the ID3 tag and the
SlimX uses it to navigate. I'm not a programmer, but it seems to me like a
very easy thing to do.
