Actually, it doesn't read a set of switches per se, if you read the manual ;), you'll se that the switches aren't fixed in --alt-preset modes, they continue to change to whatever suits the current audio block best. So you can't replace --alt-preset modes with normal switches. It is, however possible to tweak the presets to one's liking. For instance, if I encode a movie sound track, it's usually a bit overkill to use the --alt-preset standard mode, because the avg. bitrate it produces is a bit high. In that case, I give the --alt-preset standard an extra switch, like [-V 4] which tells the preset to tune the vbr quality a little lower than the standard preset usually does (-V 2). Also, I always put in the [-q 0] switch to ensure best quality.
