I've been trying to get Lame to convert an .m4a file into mp3, and the Lame
encoder says that the file was converted successfully, but the resulting mp3
file (when played) is just noise. I tried many different .m4a files with
the same result, so I know its not a problem with a particular .m4a file.
The .m4a files were created by importing/ripping some of my CDs with iTunes.
And I can successfully convert AIF or WAV files, so I know that Lame is
installed and working properly. I have Lame 3.96.1 installed in
/usr/local/bin/ on my Mac OS X 10.4.2 (Tiger).

So I did a little research online and found that other people had gotten
.m4a files to successfully convert to mp3 by using:

--preset 320

So I tried that and got the following output:

Assuming raw pcm input file
LAME version 3.96.1 (http://lame.sourceforge.net/)
Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 20094 Hz - 20627 Hz
Encoding /Users/davew/Documents/Saturday Night.m4a
      to /Users/davew/Documents/SaturdayNight.mp3
Encoding as 44.1 kHz 320 kbps j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (4.4x) qval=3
    Frame | CPU time/estim | REAL time/estim | play/CPU | ETA
  1364/1366 (100%)| 0:03/ 0:03| 0:04/ 0:04| 10.604x| 0:00
average: 320.0 kbps LR: 1365 (99.93%) MS: 1 (0.07321%)
Writing LAME Tag...done
ReplayGain: -11.8dB

But when I try to play the resulting mp3 file, its just static noise.

Another person online had posted success by using:

--alt-preset standard

So I tried that and got the following output:

Assuming raw pcm input file
LAME version 3.96.1 (http://lame.sourceforge.net/)
Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 18671 Hz - 19205 Hz

      to /Users/davew/Documents/SaturdayNight.mp3
Encoding as 44.1 kHz VBR(q=2) j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (ca. 7.3x) qval=3

Writing LAME Tag...done
ReplayGain: -11.8dB

But when I try to play the resulting mp3 file, its just static noise.

Does anyone have any words of advice on what I might be doing wrong or what
does work?

Sorry for the long-winded message... Thanks!
