Well, that's a good question. The source I'm referring to seemed, to my eyes, to be both hard telecined and interlaced. Now it's quite possible that at each given moment it was either telecined or interlaced, I'm not sure. All I can say is that it needed to be inverse telecined in order to preserve sync, and that after being inverse telecined pullup, the picture still showed combed edges (i.e. interlaced).
