Mark Haveman Project Manager, Minnesota Environmental Quality Board Urban Development Generic Environmental Impact Statements (GEIS) Over the past couple of years, Mr. Haveman has been involved in several large research projects that looks at the societal, economic and environmental impacts of development decisions and urban sprawl. Specifically he will discuss the status and work to date on the state's urban development GEIS. If time allows, Mr. Haveman will introduce the concepts associated with site value taxation approach as an alternative to the current property tax system: What is the Urban Development Generic Environmental Impact Statement? What is the Urban Development GEIS supposed to accomplish? Is more research needed? What is the Draft Urban Development GEIS Scoping Document? When will the GEIS be completed? NOTE: In addition to the enlightening and entertaining luncheon speaker, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's latest hybrid car, Toyota Prius, will be on display in the parking lot. The Prius is rated at 52 miles per gallon (MPG) city and 45 MPG highway. It has been available in Japan for three years where 35,000 were sold and claims to be the first mass-produced hybrid car in the world. 650,000 hybrids will be manufactured this year worldwide. Prius is certified as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle which means it runs 75 percent cleaner than the standard for Ultra Low Emission Vehicles. Minnesota Environmental Initiative Conference -- Friday, October 27, Refocus on Waste Management: Will Yesterday's Solutions Work Tomorrow?? Science Museum of Minnesota The conference will provide the first public opportunity for representatives from the Office of Environmental Assistance and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce to present their differing assessments of waste management trends in the state. Rather than soliciting a debate among affected parties, the conference is designed to create new dialogue among diverse stakeholders in the waste management system who often have opposing interests.
