This hits a major sore spot for me. As someone who has lived in
Minneapolis and worked in the suburbs for many years, I've run into the
suburban fright attitude fairly regularly. I've always defended the city
vociferously. And until this past year, I rather naively believed that I
was the sort of person elected officials would like to see remain in
Minneapolis.

Last winter and spring, the juxtaposition of city's attack on the Hard
Times with approval of TIF support for Block E (and by extension ESPN and
Gameworks) left me with the impression that the mayor and city council
leadership are more concerned with making Minneapolis palatable to visitors
from outside than they are with keeping it fun, interesting, and
comfortable for those of us who already live here.
