The best asset we have to offer any company is a work
force. Talk to Denny Donaldson of NICO Plating and he
will tell you why he decided to stay in Minneapolis
and expand his business at 29th and 1st Av. So.
His friends had gone to the Farmingtons of the world
and built the new state of the art cement block
building for their company. The problem is they were
scrambling to find enough employees. They had to
reduce the growth rate because they couldn't maintain
the employee base required to expand the business.
Again, this boils down to a really bad public
transportation system. While you may be able to catch
a bus to Eden Prairie, you will be dropped at the Eden
Prairie center. If you work in Eden Prairie but a
couple miles from the Eden Prairie center, that bus
ride doesn't help you much. Communities like Eden
Prairie don't have a circulation system to take people
from the Eden Prairie Center to the local companies.
The other side of the coin is people from the city are
reluctant to take jobs with poor transportation like
this because if they have an emergency and have to
leave work, they can't get back into the city.
I wager a bet that companies in these communities are
scrambling for employees on a regular basis. However,
NICO has doubled it's business in the city and has no
problem finding employees.
We have the work force and we have the work force
right here in the city. I agree with R.T. that it's
how we market the city. However, it's not just the
job of the Mayor to shake the pom poms. After all in
major corporations, it's not the CEO that brings in
the business, it's the sales and marketing department.
The CEO just comes in to help close the deal. There
should be a department strictly dedicated to marketing
to potential businesses. One that's not tied to
handing out the public dollar. The other piece is
taxes and regulation but that is a whole other e-mail.
