This I can agree with:
My first partner of 4 yrs. at SAFE lived in the Plymouth area, yet I still
get calls, 2 yrs after he retired, from folks who exclaim how he busted his
back for the residents, businesses, and even the homeless and chronic
inebriates in our district. My second partner lived just on the other side
of the border in St. Anthony, and I could hardly keep up with him as he
tackled issues brought to him by our brass and residents... My third
partner lives in the exurbs, yet in meetings his enthusiasm toward
developing partnerships with residents was infectious. My current partner
lives in Minneapolis and he has the pro-active attitude and energy of the
previous three.
Many cops whom I've broached the subject with said simply, they didn't have
anything against Minneapolis--some of them grew up here--it's just they
didn't like being limited where they could choose to live.
I have heard that St. Paul has a middle-of-the-road approach, something
like, you don't have to live in the city but you get some extra points
weighted toward promotions? But even for some, being able to live on a
hobby farm is worth more than the benefits attained rising through the
ranks...
