As a middle age white male, I have never experienced what I felt to be
inappropriate treatment by police. At the same time however, I wouldn't
be surprised if blacks may receive different, perhaps stiffer treatment
than whites, from police officers. If there are dual standards -
however those standards may have come to be - I would characterize that
as offensive and immoral.
I simply have no concept what it would be like to be black. I have had
opinions on neighborhood issues, politics and so forth, which I've
expressed and received thoughtless and off base criticism for
expressing. However, I know that if I keep my mouth shut on these
topics I can protect myself from such criticisms.
I wonder sometimes, since it is impossible to conceal one's skin color,
what it might be like to frequently have irrational judgments made about
oneself, just because people see a different skin color. I know there
are still many people who hold on to ridiculous, hate-based opinions of
blacks. Just seeing blacks triggers anger and anxiety in their minds,
and when I see this expressed through their words and deeds, I'm amazed
at the ignorance and fear.
I can't say whether or not there is racial profiling in Minneapolis. If
there is, I would suspect it's a matter of passive practice - allowing
officers to slip in to habits which are questionalbe - rather than an
active policy of establishing dual treatment standards for blacks and whites.
