>Minneapolis City Council President Jackie Cherryhomes and Council Members
Joan Campbell and Brian Herron won DFL endorsements for reelection Saturday.
>
>Cherryhomes represents the Fifth Ward in north Minneapolis; Campbell,
chairwoman of the Ways and Means Committee, represents the Second Ward,
which includes the University of Minnesota and the Metrodome area, and
Herron represents the Eighth Ward in the south-central part of the city.
>
>Cherryhomes faced minimal opposition Saturday and took 93 percent of the
vote on the first ballot. Her only competitor, Natalie Johnson Lee, won 7
percent of the vote.
>
>Campbell faced challenges from Brian Hanninen and Paul Zerby. She received
the endorsement on the second ballot with 61 votes to Zerby's 38. Hanninen,
who received 16 votes on the first ballot to Zerby's 28 and Campbell's 53,
gave his support to Campbell for the second vote.
>
>Zerby said he will not abide by the endorsement and will run in the
September primary election.
>
>"I think the time has come for a change down there at City Hall, and it's
very difficult when you have an incumbent who's been in since 1989 ... to
unseat her in the convention process," he said. "So I'm seeking a larger
mandate."
>
>Campbell responded: "I'm always disturbed when people don't accept the
endorsement, but it's a democracy, and he can run if he wants to."
>
>Campbell also faces opposition from Green Party candidate Cam Gordon.
>
>Herron was opposed by Robert Lilligren and school board member Sandra
Miller, but he was endorsed on the first ballot. He won 52 votes to
Lilligren's 3 and Miller's 12, with 2 votes for no endorsement. Walt
Gutzmer withdrew shortly before the vote and gave his support to Lilligren.
>
>Herron also will be challenged in the Sept. 11 primary. Lilligren, 40, an
independent building contractor, said he will run. Before the convention,
Miller said she would not run against an endorsed candidate, but announced
Saturday she would run in the primary.
>
>"I'm going to continue to run because I know I can win," Miller said.
"This community needs me."
>
>DFL endorsing conventions already have been held in the Seventh, Ninth,
11th and 12th wards. Next weekend the DFL will endorse council candidates
in the Third, Sixth and 13th wards. Conventions will be held on March 31
for the First, Fourth and 10th wards.
>
>Republicans have scheduled a convention for the 10th Ward on Thursday.
Shirley Carlson is expected to be endorsed. The Independence Party has not
scheduled any conventions. For information on ward locations, Minneapolis
residents can call Hennepin County Elections at 612-348-5151 or enter their
