I don't know all the details of Lisa McDonald's private life and personal
aspirations (more info than anyone is entitled to), and don't have the specifics
of the history of the conflict between Basim and Lisa because Lisa hasn't
divulged this information to me, and not long ago Basim told me that he and Lisa
had mended fences.

In any case, there are some implicit and explicit accusations in Basim's message
that need some perspective -

Basim wrote:
As to Ms. McDonald's response, she admitted that she was
a DFL delegate for the last 8 years.... the
reason she became a DFL delegate 8 years ago was for the selfish reason of
getting the DFL endorsement.

*** Isn't it fairly standard for folks who run for office to get involved long
before they actually run? I consider building an understanding of the processes
and issues to be important for anybody who wants to eventually run for political
office - I think (don't have statistics but could name several individual cases)
that a large percentage of candidates have previously been delegates - many of
the DFLers elected last fall had previously been delegates; this demonstrates
committment and should be encouraged!

Basim wrote:
Despite the fact that McDonald promised the delegates that day
that she would honor the endorsement process and not run if she was not
nominated, she chose to run without the endorsement.

***I wasn't there, so I don't know what was said; However, many many DFLers run
for office despite not getting the endorsement - Skip Humphrey, Sandra Miller,
and many many more - we are all aware of that. When I was a delegate, many
strong DFL office holders (including the mayor) encouraged me to support Skip
Humphrey's endorsement, even though it was widely known he would not honor the
endorsement. The party is, to say the least, divided on this issue - probably
because it involves individual ideals.

Basim wrote:
If you believe for a moment that she is a true DFLer, YOU ARE WRONG! She is
more Republican than George Bush.

*** I haven't noticed Lisa supporting corporate welfare the way Bush or many
Republicans do, in fact I believe she has advocated against huge subsidies for
corporate developments (now really, does anyone believe Target couldn't afford a
new building?)

Basim wrote:
FYI, she is married to one (Republican).

***And former Clinton Administration top official James Carville (sp?) who was
undeniably a Democrat is married to someone (can't remember the name at the
moment) who is an avowed Republican - I think former congressperson - and now
part of the Bush administration. I've seen the two of them debate on national
television and admired them for their ability to maintain separate, distinct
beliefs of their own, and still be in a loving relationship; I think that their
diverse positions actually made them both stronger. We don't generally chose
who we fall in love with based on their politics.

Basim wrote:
I would hope that people stop using the DFL party to their advantage.

***I'm more worried about campaign contributors using the DFL to their advantage
than the candidates, but doubt they'll stop.

PS: One thing I know the three of us agree on is the MCDA.....
