I for one will gladly pay $153 per year for good parks. As a matter of
fact, I would even prefer to pay more money for parks as a trade-off for
the City's subsidies and give-aways to Target Corporation, Ryan
Construction, Steven Spielberg, Brookfield LePage (the owners of Gavidae
and City Center), etc. If the responsibilities for the park system were
turned over to our current mayor and city council, the park budget would
undoubtedly be transferred to these corporate subsidies. Thanks to the
city council, we are undoubtedly spending more money to subsidize large
corporations than for parks. We certainly do not need to enhance this
trend.
A more important question than how much money is spent on the park
system is what are we getting for our money. Ms. Becker would make more
of a contribution if she could share any information she has that any of
this money is being wasted, rather than superficial rhetoric and
statistics to advance an anti-environmental, pro-corporate machine
politics agenda.
