>From Thursday's Strib:
NRP petition drive may have to start anew
Those organizing a petition drive to force full funding of the Minneapolis
Neighborhood Revitalization Program were told Wednesday their petitions
probably would be rejected for lack of specificity.
The organizers met with the city Charter Commission to explore their options
for getting a measure on the November ballot to fund the program at its
historical level of $20 million annually. Legislative changes have cut the
program's future funding significantly.
Organizers had no immediate reaction. But the suggestion by the city
attorney's office means they may need to start all over again if they want
to petition for an amendment. They were urged to be more specific about
which charter provisions would be modified.
The deadline for proposing that a charter amendment be placed on the ballot
is Aug. 14. Petition organizers have collected thousands of signatures in
the past week, but remain short of the 8,760 required from registered
voters.
The Charter Commission also could decide to initiate such a vote, but
several members said they have little inclination to do so in the time
available.
