You're right.  It's not important.  It's "importance" is all media hype.
The claim that stadiums and teams provide economic benefit was proven to
be a myth.  I'm sick of paying taxes on sports stadiums.  I want my taxes
going to schools.
If there is so much economic benefit to having the team in town why aren't
the affected businesses lining up to buy stock in a corporation designed
to keep them?
They are a big corporation, with monopoly control of the market.  There
are solutions to their problems but the owners aren't willing to pursue
them.  They just want a big corporate handout.
