Why did the theater building cross the road? To hover over the other side.

We should be flattered that the Guthrie's internationally-renowned designers
drew inspiration from local architecture: namely, the bridges-to-nowhere we
get downtown whenever a building on the skyway system is torn down.

This skyway-to-nowhere seems like a reach ... not only for scenic overlooks
but also for attention and state money. It's the greatest length anyone's
gone to provide a view of the Stone Arch Bridge since James J. Hill, who
curved his wannabe-aquaduct so passengers could admire it from train windows
as they crossed.

The new Guthrie's cantilevered, "endless bridge" defies gravity -- and the
traditional rule of bridges, that the ends justify the means.
