A different perspective than Mr. Cygan's. I drive on Hiawatha every day and live only a few blocks from it. While it may not have the pedestrian traffic of Lake Street it certainly has more than the avenue that I live on and I am only four blocks east of Hiawatha.
There is usually more activity on the east side of Hiawatha now that there is construction on the west. However, early this evening, between Lake and 46th, I saw several different groups of children (all boys) on the west side; walking, biking, or playing in the construction zone. There were also various adults walking on the east side as well as a couple of bicyclists. My own son crosses it twice a day on his way to and from school. Try 32nd and Hiawatha at 8:15 am if you want to see pedestrian traffic. As to the lack of enforcement, we are obviously travelling at different times. I often see cars pulled over (two on tonight's trip--one by Minneapolis police, one by the highway patrol). Even though it "looks like a highway" it is still a city street and it's part of my neighborhood. Anyway, the point of my previous post was that exceeding the speed limit is breaking the law and breaking the law is wrong. We shouldn't be able to "pick and choose" which laws we are going to obey, whether as drivers or elected/appointed representatives.
