Wow, Jim. I've got to say I can't believe that you accused anyone of spin control in a post like this; much less to draw so many conclusions and connections between unrelated areas. So if I'm reading you correctly, no one's allowed to agree with a policy change or suggestion without there being some insidious motive or payback? If I may say, that's as fantastic as a person throwing their support behind a candidate in order to get a housing project moved through a committee. Totally insane.
No, I don't make deals like you described with my principles or support but rather have a totally different understanding of the proposal, which I'm assuming you still would allow me to have. Were the proposal what you were asserting, I would agree with you and probably be staging the same argument you did, minus the irrelevant connections to Don Samuels, NRP and the USSR, etc. But my take on this was pretty much what Michelle Martin wrote, not that it's a gag order, but rather than the responsibility for the function is shifting. So just for curiousity sake, can you point out where in the policy it results in the police not being able to talk? I know what the rumors have been, but I was under the impression that the policy was still being formed and I have this weird belief about hearing the facts and details before I start saying something is wrong. Call me crazy, but it's kind of that "innocent until proven guilty" thing we tend to prize in the good ol' US of A. I would be offended that you incorporated institutionalized racism into this, but I can't find a single logical connection between racism and your argument, so I'm just assuming you meant something different. Bottom line is that my thoughts on this policy is that it's one to ensure freedom not restrict it. I abhor censorship. That's not what this is in my opinion. The police already have centralized communications, but they haven't been doing a good job. Now the Mayor is trying to correct that by putting the responsibility in an area that is more focussed. How that becomes censorship (especially since the policy hasn't been written) I don't know. But maybe someone's got a crystal ball they've been hiding out there.... Hey, I supported Don, and so did many Green Party members. I'm also against the war in Iraq and so are they, that must be suspicious as well. Mark Stenglein supported Don and I've supported the African American Men's Project...in fact I'm one of the commissioners. My god man, you've stumbled onto a mass conspiracy of people from different ideologies coming together on good ideas. What is this world coming to?
