I am not sure if it's still there, but the Hillcrest redevelopment area just on the other side of East Hennepin had a calf feed operation (Purina, I think) that had a stack aroma like that--about the same as ADM and for the same reason. It was the combination of sorghum or molassas and malt and (stuff you really don't want to know about) that made the aroma. They probably used a tall stack to diffuse the aroma so it didn't get too obnoxious in an small area. ADM is to the south of MH and the Purina plant is to the north. Does this boil down to asking if you noticed which way the wind was blowing? That would help, I guess. I expect that Hillcrest will close down that Purina operation, but if it's still there, the prevailing winds could carry that aroma right to the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood at the University end of it. THere is also a herbal light industry in that area (at about 6th or 5th Ave and 9th St.), but I don't know if they do their own packaging or not. I also don't really remember if it is herbal therapy or herbs to cook with. We also have a foundry on either Spring or Winter Street just north of Como, and we can smell their pours often, especially in the summer. Oh--I forgot the commercial bakery (cinnamon and powdered sugar and cocoa aromas) off Elm street at 23rd). THat's also very close to the U campus and can be intense.
