Issue: Market BBQ Story
Boy, I had in mind to try the Market BBQ sometime
because it is the granddaddy of all the
restaurants of its kind. But this story really
made me wonder. Now, it could be a particularly
unfortunate management employee. The best places
do have that experience, at least for a short
while. The owners should be advised of the
incident, and then see what happens. As to the
police, well, they wander into the middle of such
a brouhaha and common sense SHOULD tell them
"don't take a side, just figure out how to keep
things cool", but then again you have an
INDIVIDUAL on the police force, and once again it
is the luck of the draw. Maybe this manager
knows who is on duty in his precinct and figures
this guy shares his biases. I don't know.

Sure is hard when you weren't there. Probably
never get a story that everybody agrees on. I
hope the family got some of the names of the
onlookers. That might tip the balance.

If everything is as told, it sure disappoints me
in some of the people of my city. We should have
matured WAY past what was described.

Issue: Library Budget
I like the idea of keeping all libraries that
have a reasonable future open with shortened
hours. Lengthening hours is the easiest thing to
do when the budget picture improves. Given the
assumption we aren't raising taxes beyond the 8
percent, something has to go, and the most
elastic thing is the open hours. Bookmobile
customers adjust to even shorter hours than
these. And patrons of the library will adjust for
the time being. The school functions the library
was trying to adopt are a nicety, and they are
well worth restoring when the finances permit,
but they are the easiest to shed at this time.
One wonders why the schools, for whom these
functions are more central, hadn't taken them on,
but I suppose that was money, too. Perhaps there
is something the schools are doing that is less
critical than these functions. That is for the
school board to consider.

And always remember, it is the sour economy that
is the root cause of all this. Perhaps someday,
we'll wake up to realize the tax cuts aren't
really getting at the problem. Then, will be the
time when we can consider undoing some of this.
