A young boy literally came within a hair of being run down this morning at
32nd and Hiawatha. I held my breath as a large pick up truck almost took
him out. Not the fault of the driver of the truck...he was at a red light
that just turned green. The kid just didn't nearly have enough time to
cross Hiawatha. It is only a matter of time.... unless pedestrian safety
is improved along the corridor.

There have been numerous posts over the past six months commenting on the
lack of time to jog/trot (virtually impossible to walk) across Hiawatha.
There was a lot of discussion and time that went into changing the speed
limit only 5-10 miles (over most of the corridor) and I'd be willing to put
money down that the average speed on Hiawatha still exceeds the new posted
signs. An equal amount of time needs to be put into ensuring that the
stoplight/walk light timing and enforcement is adequate for an average
person to cross Hiawatha without jeopardizing their life.

It's ridiculous that I need to pick my 3 year-old son up - like a football,
tucked under my arm - and jog across Hiawatha. Again, it's only a matter of
time until someone (very likely a child) loses their life.
