Subject: once again, on rent control

Yes, David Piehl, as I imperfectly tried to indicate, there need to be
allowances for legitimate increase in costs and an adjustment for the cost
of living. These increases cause legitimate increases in rents for
landlords. The problem that should, in my opinion, be prevented is when
whole communities are evicted to gentrify an area. This is a very tricky
problem. What you and your neighbors have done to 2nd Avenue is amazing.
You have restored houses that are now a beautiful reminder of past glory
that was once everyone's expectation. You have raised everyone's level of
hope. Were those units of affordable housing before the period of
renovation? Yes. Were other affordable housing units available in the
immediate are? Yes. Is this the best use of the best use of these
buildings? Of course!

What happened in Loring Park was that a community was evicted. The working
poor were thrown out and yuppies moved in. I have nothing against yuppies.
Some of my best friends and relatives are young, urban and employed in a
professional capacity, and Loring Park is still a wonderful area. But I
still think the people who were evicted got a bad deal. Rent Control is a
big hammer. But most landlords wouldn't be affected by it. It would only
apply to landlords who doubled or tripled rents on existing tenants.

Bill Cullen, I am truly sorry for discussing publicly an email that I
thought was public when it was sent privately. I do not have a subject
function on this email and I did not see that it was intended for me alone.
Excuse me for thrusting you into the middle of the discussion and then
taking a potshot at you. It was careless, but not intentional.
