I find it amazing that some people think that
appointing a superintendent with no background in education is okay to do with a
minimal amount of public discussion. Some members of the
African American community are upset -- we should all be upset. This
is a huge change and should be done only with serious input from, at a minimum,
parents and teachers. What's the rush? Jennings was going to
be the interim superintendent already. And how is it that we appoint
someone without seeing who else is out there who wants the job? I can't
help but think that if the board had appointed an African American or other
person of color without an education background that there would be an uproar
with charges of favoritism based on race [social construct or not]. And as
far as the argument goes about running the schools as a business -- that's a
laugh. Seward -- where my son went for 9 years -- had 1 copier that
collated documents for 700+ students, 34 teachers and other staff.
Paper was rationed. What business could operate that
way? I don't know whether Jennings is a good choice or a bad
choice -- I don't know how important it is to have a superintendent with a PhD
in education, but I do know that if we are going to make that kind of change, we
owe it to our kids to make it thoughtfully.
