Minneapolis Board of Education Chairperson Sharon Henry-Blythe today announced that the School Board has identified three finalists in the search for superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools.
Finalists are:
· Dr. Cheryl King, Chief Academic Officer of Providence Public Schools, Providence, R.I.
· Joseph Olchefske, consultant to urban school systems, and former Seattle Public Schools Superintendent, Seattle, Wash.
· Thandiwe (Tohn-de-way) Peebles, Regional Superintendent of Cleveland Municipal School District, Cleveland, Ohio
"I am happy to announce that all seven School Board members have reached a strong consensus around three finalists," said Chairperson Henry-Blythe. "All three are exceptional, dynamic and capable leaders who would serve the children and community of Minneapolis Public Schools well."
Chairperson Henry-Blythe stressed that the Board of Education has approached the task of selecting a new superintendent very thoughtfully and deliberately. "Choosing our next leader is perhaps the single most important responsibility of a School Board," she said. "I am happy to say that these three finalists clearly rose to the top for all School Board members."
While the decision of who will become the next Superintendent is the sole responsibility of the Minneapolis Board of Education, the School Board has outlined a process to ensure the community is able to meet and familiarize themselves with each of the three finalists.
The Minneapolis Foundation will join the School Board to introduce finalists to the community on Wednesday, June 9. The Minneapolis Foundation was instrumental in assisting the Board last November and December as more than 600 people participated in a broad community input process. The Board will interview finalists at a special board meeting on Thursday, June 10. All meetings and interviews will be open to the public, televised and broadcast live. All information will be posted at www.mpls.k12.mn.us.
"We want to encourage our community to tune in, come down, log on and get to know these people," said Chairperson Henry-Blythe. "They are extremely well-qualified individuals who bring a wealth of experience to urban education."
