As someone who does not smoke, I am offering my opinion. As reading thru the posts today I saw someone had the tagline www.smokeoutgary.org and went to see what it was all about. And also being a 9/8 resident I think I can offer my opinion.
Theres nothing more awful then trying to dine out somewhere and having to deal with someone else's cigarette smoke. I have avoided restaurants and cafes in Mpls where smoking is allowed. It's not on the menu, it's not why I left my home to go out and dine, and furthermore what really gets my goat is the people who smoke directly outside a door of a restaurant. And then the tossing of the smoking cigarette onto the grass or sidewalk. Sorry its just totally unappetizing to me. The smoker's intake fans I have seen do not work well, and they are expensive.
I grew up in a smokers household, watched my father die of larnyx and lung cancer.
I support the ban and I am glad the our elected officials Gary Schiff and the Mayor signed the ban. I am also glad we are in a age and time that this issue can be addressed. Because cigarette smoke, doesn't just stay in one place and can affect others-it does become a public issue. Just as much as some places are labeled fragrance free, or even when people (mostly women) open a bottle of nail polish on an airplane. Its happened to all of us. Smoke saturates the air.
As a Minneapolis issue, I realize this is a hot button issue for those that smoke; but having a website called smokegaryout..seems to me that there could be a more city-wide constructive issues that need to be addressed.
