Just to be clear, I don't have a side on this
question. I don't personally see a need for either
phrase.

I just didn't know why the one way was OK and the
other wasn't. I try and be culturally sensitive to
those who are sensitive about their cultures, but if I
don't know the reason a rule is there, especially one
that is as aribitrary on the surface as this one, it
is far more difficult to be mindful of it.

WizardMarks has clarified that the specific phrasing
"colored person" gained negative connotations because
it was used during segregation. Now I understand what
the issue is.

I'm wondering whether this reporter was aware of this or not. I think often there's a gotcha mentality about this sort of thing - and it gets in the way of real discussion where people really learn about issues of race. That's why I asked about the history of this reporter. A couple people mentioned on the list that David Channen had a history of racist reporting. I asked for examples of that. I'd still be interested in examples of that.

McManus's letter to the editor came across as self-serving to me - because it changed the subject a bit about the article. While the article mentioned that Lee Edwards was African American - and he was promoted, it also mentioned that the person he replaced was one of the three officers McManus tried to discipline over the Ngo case.

Has anyone heard if this one has been discussed on Talk Radio? I listened to part of Dave Thompson's show this afternoon and they were talking about the abuse of eminent domain.
