The following is being sent to you by Minneapolis Council Member Don Samuels: Dear Friend, On Sunday afternoon an 18 year old African American man was shot and killed in a house at Fremont and 26th Avenues North, in Minneapolis' Jordan neighborhood. Please join me at that corner for a vigil to mourn this tragedy, tomorrow, Tuesday, December 21, from 12pm to 7pm. So far we have no idea why this young man died but we do know that this is the latest in an interminable and intolerable string of similarly profiled homicides in our city and nation. When will it end? It will begin to end when we decide it must; when we are as interminable in our outrage as the killings are persistent. Let me summarize a phone call I got this morning from an African American male resident who lives one block from this corner: "Good morning councilmember. Did you hear that there was a homicide at the house I spoke to you about on Friday? Isn't that something! If you remember, I also told you that many cars were being broken into. Well, another six cars were broken into over the weekend. I have been talking to the neighbors but the ones who have had cars broken into are now afraid to be active. They are scared and don't want to be involved. I think this is the James/Knox gang/drug group of guys, dislocated by police and community. They are now moving further up 26th to establish new territory. They are sending a message to the neighbors. It seems to be a strategy because the guys are not taking anything when they break car windows. One lady, for example, had her car broken into three times and nothing was taken. The neighbors are now terrorized and silenced. They are refusing to get involved in solutions for fear of retribution by gang members. So, the intent of the thugs has been achieved. We need your help." We must help these neighbors take courage by showing that the larger community cares. We must help these children and young people by showing that their lives are too valuable to take or lose. We must help ourselves by rising above an apathetic response to the shocking rate at which we are killing ourselves. Our humanity demands it. Please join me: What: Vigil Where: The corner of 26th and Fremont Avenues North When: Tuesday, December 21, 12pm until 7pm If you have any questions, or need directions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 673-2203.
