Actually, Toni Carter (StPaul School Board) is up this year for re-election. The Council are on four year terms so Debbie's election year is 2007. I guess the point is that NJL is not the only elected African American up for re-election this year. Unless I'm mistaken about what happened in San Francisco and other cities, this is an issue at the state legislatures because some local governments have passed legislation in favor of marriage that the Bachmann-type amendment would outlaw. So it is appropriate to seek out a position on this from our local elected officials. NJL shouldn't be singled out since there are 13 councilmembers, but a public statement has been made on her behalf. Councilmember Johnson-Lee has to clarify her position.
