It's less than one month to the the Minneapolis DFL caucuses. My guess is that there will be a lot of delegates undecided on the mayoral race. I count myself as one of the undecideds.
I'm real curious to hear how folks feel how Rybak and McLaughlin measure up. Personally, on the issues, the two don't seem all that far apart. Are there real differences in the issues, or is this going to be a contest that comes down to style, priorities, and ability to get things done? I have specific questions about these two men. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on these or other issues that distinguish the two. 1. It seems that both are a little wishy-washing on public funds for a stadium, with McLaughlin even floating an idea for a county sales tax to support a stadium. Can we describe one of the candidates as being less enthusiastic to use public funds for a stadium? 2. Both have been mass transit advocates and want to pursue the Central Cooridor LRT. Any differences here? 3. Rybak has spent much of his time fighting the airport commission over noise and expansion. I haven't heard anything about where McLaughlin fits into Airport issues. 4. Rybak has been criticized by some for not supporting public safety enough, but in what ways would McLaughlin be better? 5. Both Rybak and McLaughlin are talking about taking leadership advocating for schools. With the Mayor having no official role in Mpls public schools, what exactly are both of them suggesting? 6. Both want to save us from our rapidly increasing property taxes, but is this just a pie-in-the-sky promise? 7. Finally, with the current hostility Minneapolis faces at the capitol, is it possible for one of these two DFLers to do a better job working with Republicans in St. Paul? Or is Minneapolis pretty much strewed unless it elects Ron Eibensteiner as Mayor? I want someone to convince me one of these two men is the one to go with.
