It's nice to have a knowledgeable "tourist" such as Andy Driscoll give an
opinion on the fiasco that is the traffic signaling on Hiawatha.

In this regular's opinion, a lot of the problem, for me, at least, could be
solved if they would get rid of the red/green arrow signals controlling
traffic wanting to turn east at certain times of the day. I had to wait an
extra two minutes tonight because I couldn't make it through an intersection
on the green, and even though there was no oncoming traffic, I was not
allowed to make a turn.

If there were no arrow controls, through traffic would move much faster
during most of the day.

Because of the frequency of the trains, it might be harder to do that for
traffic wanting to turn west. But it should be looked at. It might just
require more prominent semaphores controlling traffic wanting to head over
the tracks when trains were approaching.

Subject: [Mpls] Hiawatha stoplights

By chance, I drove my daughter to the airport last week, and headed for
class at the University along northbound Hiawatha. Living in Saint Paul.
Being self-employed, I rarely confront rush hour, except when driving to an
8 AM class at the Humphrey Institute two days a week. The Hiawatha
experience was mixed. First I was amazed at the sight of the rail operating
at full tilt. A great addition. But the massive delays at the lights at
46th, 42nd, 38th, 32nd, maybe more, were all but unbearable. <much snipping>
