There's an excellent article on today's City Pages about what is shaping up
as one of the more hotly contested ward races in the City, the 13th Ward.

Without stating my preference, I would like to say how fortunate we in Ward 13 are to have the 3 candidates mentioned. Perhaps unlike some of the choices in other contests or past races, I don't think Ward 13 residents can make a bad choice among Lisa McDonald, Michael Hohmann and Betsy Hodges.

I've met and spoken with all three. None would be a poor representative for our ward. All of them are focused on public service to their constituency and to the city.

The election will come down to each voter's personal priorities and how their personal political philosophies match up with those of the candidates. One candidate might hold views more similar to a voter on a subset of issues, yet another candidate might be more effective over-all on all of the issues that will be faced. It will be a difficult decision for many voters.

I think it's a fine example of good democracy in action -- although the projected costs give me pause. If only all elected offices had several such well-qualified candidates seeking them, what a pleasant difference that might make.
