The above statement backs up Johnson-Lee's accusation of the University's desire to be for the elite. Professor Erwin (who's department will benefit from the change) beleive that it should be the mission of the state university system to deal with the resident students who are not up to the admission level of the U. If you graduate from high school and desire for higher education, the land grant university should offer a doorway. Period. It doesn't hurt- or bring down the rest of the University's mission. If Harvard can offer a general college type school for almost anyone, why can't the University of Minnesota? All of those adults and part-timers taking classes at night clearly haven't brought down the 'image' of the school. As a graduate (and former advocate) of the State University System, I say let the U go, just remember during the legislative season when higher education funding is being debated, who turned their backs on Minnesota students.
