I have dealt with the yellow water in the past and it has always been when they have been flushing out the hydrants in my neighborhood. I called the city one day when after washing a load of white clothes saw the results. The person I contacted said if I notice the yellow water I should quite running hot water as it can affect not only my washer but my hot water heater in a negative way. I asked if there was some way to be notified so I wouldn't damage my appliances and they could not provide an answer. Gotta love dealing with the government.
