Good point Chris. Each day I drive across the Lake Street bridge into Saint Paul, remarking to my 2-year-old that "we are crossing the river into St. Paul."
Of course we don't want to forget about our friends in Northeast, Como-U, Marcy Holmes, Prospect Park, etc. And we can't forget about Nicollet Island, standing in the middle of the mighty Mississippi. Any other more accurate, but not-too-insulting euphanisms for St. Paul? (Though I guess that's not a Mpls-specific question.) Again, my apologies to my Minneapolis neighbors on the other side of the river. Derek Burrows Reise Longfellow, Mpls Chris Steller wrote: I realize "Across the River" means St. Paul, but for a moment I thought this time the phrase might actually mean that part of Minneapolis lying east of the Mississippi. Years ago on this list users of the term "Nordeast" were taken to task, with little lasting effect. (Those who found "Outstate" derogatory perhaps had greater success with "Greater Minnesota.") Nothing derogatory about "Across the River," really ... it just has that "City of Lakes" feeling, of willfully looking past the fact that a fair section of Minneapolis is "across the river" from the rest of the city. Of course in Longfellow, from where Derek Burrows Reise posted, St. Paul really is just across the river, so no offense taken.
