I'd have to say I'm a bit dismayed about the thought of the Southwest
Journal losing it's editor, David Brauer (the listserve moderater). For
those of you who don't read this publication on a regular basis it is
probably one of the best neighborhood newspapers in the City of Minneapolis.
It has all the regular stuff like neighborhood meetings and crime stats but
also has detailed articles about issues affecting Southwest and beyond. The
actions of City Council are also posted, providing some much needed
transparency on the happenings of City Hall.
The election coverage was superb and provided more information on SW
candidates, and city-wide candidates, than any other source I read during
the campaign. It's probably no real coincidence that voter turn-out was so
high in the Wards served by the newspaper. An informed and engaged
constituancy seems to be more of a voting constituancy. They have some top
notch journalists, some of which were great neighborhood journalists when
they were students and worked for the MN Daily. I can only hope that the
next editor takes the task as seriously as the current editor and works to
uphold the current standard of reporting that its readers have come to
expect.
