Now that the election is over, I urge all of our elected officials and citizens to scroll through the summary of the ASPO USA Conference recently sponsored by the Mayor of Denver (himself a geologist) and the County, as well as by the US branch of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil.
The coverage I link to below is concise and thorough. Respected scientists, economists, industry representatives, and engineers gave various reports. Much of this stuff -- especially the report from Peter Dea, CEO of Western Gas Resources -- rightly had people on the edges of their seats. If we have any wisdom at all, we will pay close attention and begin to organize Minneapolis for the resource depletion issues which will dominate our lives for the next 20 years. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett also spoke. He said, amoung other things: "I am a conservative Republican but I try not to be an idiot!" Bartlett also asked this question, proving that he is not a politician interested only in short-term issues and spin-fixes. "What kind of world are we leaving for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren? What will they say about us -- what terrible people we were that we used up this rich endowment in such a short time?" You can also link to slides online related to the dozen-or-so presentations made. Superb content of the sort that ought to be at the heart of our city planning and political conversation.
