In order to write your own monitoring you would need some pretty decent programming
experience because it gets a little tricky. If your looking at monitoring only on the
mainframe, you could use some automation to check queue depths and such without
writing much real code. Also you can look at the SMF records that can be produced,
but I will leave that up to somebody else to explain...it's not really something I
know much about.

However, if you are really looking to do some monitoring without programming, you will
need a vendor product. Luckily there are plenty of them out there to choose from. I
have used most of them and if you want to know my opinion on the ones that I have
implemented, just send a e-mail to my personal address. I don't really want to put
product banter on the listserv.

Talk to you soon,

B

Thanks for the info. Here is the problem, I am not a programmer, just the
administrator and my background is mostly mainframe. I have written a few
programs for the mainframe. I support the server side, but writing a program
in C++ is very remote as I have had only one programming course in it and
that was a few years ago.

On NT (or Unix) just right a program that sends PCF messages to capture the
QM statistics that you are looking for. If you look at:

        http://publibfp.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/html/csqzac03/csqzac03tfrm.htm

you will quickly learn all the wonderful things you can monitor and
statistics you can gather without having to buy any software. The simplest
way to write one of these programs is in Java using the ms0b support pac:

        http://www-3.ibm.com/software/integration/support/supportpacs/individual/ms0
        b.html

but it won't pick up any of the new cool statistics in 5.3. If you want
those you will have to RYO, but we did it with a c program that runs on
every server executed by crontab sending data back to a central location.
It works great we use it for monitoring and statistics. The only part we
are having trouble with is event monitoring because of the push, rather that
        pull for real-time use.

Hursley, ms0b is really great, but can you take a look at updating it for
WMQ 5.3? That would be very helpful.

        Thanks,

Well, what kind of statistics ? What Platform ? You can use MO71 to view
        queue and channel statistics.
