On HPUX, the MQ install modifies /usr/lib/nls/iconv/config.iconv If this is not modified, SVRCONN channels won't start. As was pointed out to me, there is a script to update this after HPUX maintenance. There may be other little gotchas. Then I looked more closely at this and this is what I have found: On a Solaris MQ installation, the amq.cat file is neither placed in /opt/mqm nor in /var/mqm directories. Instead it is placed directly in the /usr/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES. I figured this out from another MQ installation. So, I copied the amq.cat from a "good-looking" server to the "bad-one" into the /usr/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES directory. And then it was working just fine. For WMQI, we need to create two soft links in the /usr/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES directory pointing to the catalog files in /opt/wmqi/messages/<lang> directory. If you have not copied the message catalogue files and/or your environment profile does not define their location MQ will be "unable to display an error message". The error message could well have been a successful response message eg "WebSphere MQ queue manager started." The message catalogue file is called amq.cat and normally located in /opt/mqm/lib/locale/C/LC_MESSAGES, this will be dependant upon your profile "LANG" environment value. The other environment variable NLSPATH defines the location of the message catalogue files. We always installed it on the new boxes. One of the reasons for these messages to pop are security related - ie: when MQ is not authorised to write either the "errors" directory and/or logs directory. We have taken care of creating all the soft links that an MQ installation would create in /usr/lib and /usr/bin directories. The new server picked up everything and we were able to start WMQ and WMQI without any problems. Everything looks OK except when a command is executed it would end up giving a mesage like this -- "WebSphere MQ was unable to display an error message for message id hexadecimal %6, with inserts %1, %2, %3, %4 and %5." But, the command execution does what it is supposed to do, meaning it executes successfully except showing the above message. Every attempt to run a command, results in an FDC generated, and the FDC contains the same kind of information as displayed at the command prompt. Some commands like "mqver" work fine. Any idea? Is there anything that has to be worried about? Did I miss something here? Any known issues when the MQ binaries are copied from one server to another as against a fresh installation? I understand this is not a recommended procedure, but wanted to know if someone has already tried this and share their experiences.
