Jeff,

if you just start a channel and somthing goes wrong, you see the channel in 
state RETRY - but you do not really know, why.

A channel ping tells you a little more, for example:

- listener not available
- channel not defined remotely
- SSL configuration mismatch
- ...

This is also an argument, to let a listener running when a QMgr ist stopped for 
a moment.

The only thing, what a ping does not check is the sequence number 
(unfortunately).
