Thanks John, I must have had something unusual happening at the time. When I tried to make the change, I was the only user. I was probably attempting some other "illegal" act. Subsequently I did manage to make a small, different change to a table.
The main thing is, Now I know that I should be able to treat the tables as though they were "integrated" and I can track down any problems if required in the future. My strategy is that I have my "code" part on the server (split from the tables). The other users have their code part on their own workstations. Each has batch icon to allow my copy of the code part to be copied to their PC. This allows me to work on the "improvements" as required and is quickly updated to each PC. Crude but it works. Thank you very much for your help, it is greatly appreciated. Keith- If you opened the data-only database, made a change, and saved it, you should see the change in the table. However, you might need to re-link the table you changed in the "code" part of the database and give each user the new code. Users should be opening a local copy of the code on their machine, not sharing a code database on a file server. Hi I opened the "tables only" part on drive W. Access only showed the tables in that mode. Are you indicating that I should have been edit the tables ? Keith- Are you *sure* you're editing the shared table database on the "W" drive? You must be the only one in the database (including users of the application with linked tables) when you try to make a change to a table structure. You cannot edit the structure from the linked tables in the "code" copy of the application. Hi again, I have split my current masterpiece database, so the tables are on drive W. I love the ability of being able to work on the forms etc without the users having to stop. This is the first time Ive organised one this way. However as the database is evolving (as they sometimes do) I needed to change a field in a table. The chages did not take effect. This was an unused one, and I found a use for a new one. Is it normal for the changes not to take effect? I was the only user. Does splitting the data base make it impossible to edit the tables later ? Keith Browning Browning's Electronic Services 32-34 High Street Dannevirke New Zealand 5491 64 6 374 6322 Yahoo!
