If you need to have sequential numbers, you could write a routine to retrieve the next available number. The trick is you need to keep track of the numbers you've given out. You may want to store the new numbers in a temp table and when a new number is requested, check the sequential numbers as well as the temp ones to make sure that a new number is given out each time.
