There you go. That must be where that advice is coming from. Note this is not
present in the actual SCOM upgrade documentation nor is it listed as a
prerequisite.

That was a general recommendation to update to the latest CU before the SP1
upgrade. I wasn’t aware of that and am not sure that’s really a necessary
step. However – it is likely that the PG tested upgrading from RTM+CU2 > SP1
since that is what was released when the documentation was written. I imagine
Kevin G. just carried that forward to CU3.

RTM CU5 is the most current release…. If you want to apply that before your SP1
upgrade. I don’t suppose it could hurt but I am not sure of any gains it would
bring you.

In any case – you can skip updating the agents twice. No need.

I am not sure why Kevin G. put that in there. CU3 was simply the latest CU for
SC 2012 RTM at the time he wrote that article.

I am not aware of any requirement to be at any CU level for SC 2012 RTM, in
order to upgrade to SP1. I would recommend going over the documentation at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj899854.aspx in order to formulate
your plan, and prerequisites. If there is some benefit of updating to an
interim RTM-CU level before upgrading to SP1, I am not aware of it.

The biggest “gotchya” is that we support different DB versions and OS versions
between SC 2012 RTM and SC 2012 SP1, so ensure those are at supported levels
before considering the upgrade.

This blog listed it as a requirement.

If you feel that it isn’t a requirement, I will follow your direction Kevin, I
have used your guides to successfully apply updates to my SCOM 2007
environments for years. ☺

Why is it that you feel that you need to first upgrade to SC RTM CU3 before you
upgrade to SC 2012 SP1?

That said – in most cases, there is no need to upgrade the agents multiple
times…. This can be done at one time. You will just need to go in and reject
any pending agents before each update you apply until you are ready to apply
the final ones.

Subject: [msmom] Upgrading SCOM 2012 to SP1

Hey guys – I am looking at upgrading my SCOM 2012 CU1 to SCOM 2012 SP1 CU2. It
looks like I need to upgrade to 2012 RTM CU3 before installing SP1.

My question is, do I need to upgrade all of my agents to CU3 before installing
SP1? I would rather not have to upgrade all of the agents multiple times.

Can I leave them in a pending management state until after I install SP1, and
then CU2 for SCOM 2012 SP1.
