~p from [ to ]  Send a file to a  remote  host  running  the
                      UNIX  system.  When you use the put command,
                      the remote system runs the command string

                      cat > to

                      while tip sends it the from file. If the  to
                      file is not specified, the from file name is
                      used.  This  command  is  actually  a  UNIX-
                      system-specific version of the `~>' command.

You might want to look at using lrsz with ~C if you want to use x/y/z 
modem.
