that's behaviour is ok, especialy when you use 1:1 probes. if you want to measure the frequency, then you should use one of the pins in module function. you can find ACLK and SMCLK on the smaller parts and additionally MCLK on the larger ones (13x, 14x, etc) programming does only need the internal RC oscillaotr and DCO, and no external parts. however, you have to make sure that the pins that are used for JTAG and pin function (P1.4...P1.7 on a F11x and F12x) dont have to much laod if you programm in circuit. also make sure that VCC is at least 2.7V and that the reset pin can be driven by the JTAG (or that it's on VCC if you dont connect it to the JTAG) chris
