Ah, my bad. That was the old chip we were using int the prototype board - 
number supplied in error by hardware dept.
On examining the new board directly, the chip fitted is indeed the M430F169 
(rev b) as you suggest.
Where can I get the latest msp430-gdbproxy from? 
The one on the website is dated 6 March 2003 vintage and won't recognise the 
device.
