It was an error I've done when modifying the msp430.md file. Something 
with strings. So it works now.

Some time ago I had also problems with cygwin and textmode.  Solution 
for me was
- mount everything in binary mode
- check out from CVS with the cygwin cvs client which obeys the
   cygwin text/binary rules.  TortoiseCVS e.g. does of course not
- unzipping/tarring should also be done with the cygwin ones
