I tried USB on linux (ubuntu) with no luck, and setting up a virtual xp
machine with USB access was also too hard (at least for me!).

I hope I'm wrong, but I think for a novice or non-software guy, the
fastest way (without reconfiguring / recompiling stuff) is to connect the
programmer to a windows pc running gdbproxy and the latest olimex drivers.
Put the win pc in a network with the linux box, and connect the debugger
to the correct gdproxy port via a tcp/ip link.
