I had already decided to go with mspgcc4, but it isn't too late to change
direction.

Agreed.

As a rule of thumb, when starting a new project I try to choose the best
compiler for the job.  On a mature project (one that has been shipping for a
while or one that has a lot of test history and/or is about to ship) I
upgrade with extreme reluctance.  Deciding exactly when a project has
reached 'maturity' is a matter of experience and is subjective.  More than
once I have chosen poorly and ended up switching back to prior version that
had just been 'upgraded.'  Such experiences tend to strengthen the
reluctance to 'change horses in mid-stream.'

Thanks again for the feedback!  I'll continue on with mspgcc4.
