Makes sense, thanks Richard.

We do all the variables on the machine, except a few that apply to all machines
that are on the collection as a backup. Just in case something happens with
the variables on the machine.

So when you move the machine into the imaging collection you have the variables
defined on the computer object or the collection? It sounds like you have it
on the collection, unless I'm reading it wrong. If you have it defined on the
imaging collection, you can't be very granular can you?

I found one post that stated in order to make the machine show up in the
collections quicker you needed to update the All Systems collection, and then
update your collection that you have your machine object in. If you have 225k
machines, I don't think it's a great idea to update the All Systems collection
randomly throughout the day for every build that is taking place in the
environment, as it would increase load on the box.

We are seeing it being much slower without a CAS as well. We have a single
Primary and it's much slower for the machine to show up in the collection. 3-5
minutes is what we are seeing versus 1-2 minutes in 2007. What we do is put
the machine into a new machine collection and then move the machine after all
the variables are done being added to a imaging collection. Our front end
looks for the machine in the new collection. If it doesn't find the machine in
the new collection it moves forward and starts the imaging process.

It does make sense. I was doing something similar in 2007 and had to re-think
things when I moved to 2012. I wasn't able to come up with a true zero touch
solution.

We're creating the computer object and assign lots of different variables to it
for the task sequence, so the user is never prompted for anything.

You wouldn't be able to get the same functionality if you used unknown
computers is my assumption. No way to assign all the different variables per
computer as unknown is really only "one computer" if that makes sense.

Thank you.

I know this has been discussed before, but can't seem to fine the thread.

If you want to create a computer object for OSD on your CAS it takes a few
minutes before it actually shows up in the collection. I understand it's
because the evaluation actually occurs on the primary and then comes back up to
the CAS. What have others down to speed this up? We're developing a front end
so techs can build machines, but we don't want to have something that says
"Please wait 5 minutes, etc .. etc".

We have over 200k clients, so we need a CAS (this is before someone asks why we
are using a CAS).

Thank you.
