Hi Guys, More for information only so others don't get caught out.
So 2012 R2 with MDT 2013 integration builds Windows XP fine - again don't ask. However the same configuration attempting to do a refresh from XP to Windows 8.1 fails at the staging boot image step whilst still running Windows XP. Appears that the MDT 2013 generated Win PE 5.0 boot image can't stage on a Windows XP instance. So manual USMT 5 backup and then bare metal build it would seem with USMT 5 or 6.3 restore on newly built pc. Either that or spin up an MDT 2012 Update 1 instance and do it all that way aside from SCCM 2012 R2 assuming you have already upgraded. It would seem that using the standard Config Manager Win PE 5.0 boot image is supported - http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2013/09/12/how-to-migrate-user-data-from-win-xp-to-win-8-1-with-system-center-2012-r2-configmgr.aspx So not a whinge - just a heads up.
